I have to agree with Diana here, the topic is too current to be funny. If we want to be treated with respect from the majority (whoever that may be) we need to be sensitive to others.
I just attended a workshop for social workers and such. I have no idea who knew I was trans and who did not, but the point is they didn't care. Mostly I stay stealth in these situations but there were some relevant points to be made and I felt no fear of what anyone would think. In fact, I did have a conversation with a nice young transman. I outed myself to him since we were discussing the subject.
This was a group of people of incredibly varied backgrounds and experience, and I just wish more of the world could be as accepting as that crowd.
They would not have found the joke funny because many of them were from various "minority" populations.
Not that we can't have a sense of humor, but the currency of the whole topic makes it in bad taste, at least.
