My hypothesis is that the consistency of a world is in direct relationship with its degree of fantasy.
You know you're close to reality when all you find is contradictions.
Like a "glitch in the Matrix" perhaps?
I just love that this inane "Who's the _____ transitioner" thread (more on that in the PS) just got shoved into realm of metaphysicality and philosophy. The reason that
The Matrix is my #1 favroite film of all time is how deeply it delves into those conjectural yet highly relevant areas of discussion and seamlessly weaves them into a not implausible and compelling storyline. The stuntwork and VFX are pretty farking amazing, too. While we can't know facts in these two areas with the degree of certainty that we know the "fact" of gravity — and that is only if the laws of physics are not just part of a larger constructed reality — they still provide important meaning to people's lives.
I have what I call an openended belief system: I believe in the possibility of nearly everything, while I concretely believe in very little. While I'm not going to go into great lengths to discuss my spiritual beliefs, I do believe in the survival of consciousness, in some purpose to Life, The Universe and Everything, and in God(dess). The difference between me and adherents to specific religious dogmas is I will not presume to tell anyone about concrete certainties based on my faith. It is not my place to do so, however I cannot resist challenging moralizers and proselytizers, especially those I see doing harm to specific groups and humanity in general with their crusading.
To this end, I am not going to completely dismiss anybody's belief system unless I see that harm is being done by it. Or if I find people have left themselves wide open for some well-deserved ribbing. I'm afraid I just cannot sometimes resist those little opportunities as they arise.

P.S. My take on threads like "Who is the Oldest/Youngest/Blondest/etc. Transitioner" is that they sometimes turn a very serious and life-changing decision into some kind of competition. Occasionally I see thoughtless cheerleading going on in this community, people who may not be appropriate for transition being egged on by well-meaning T-women enthused by their own changes. (GenderPeace has a great thread on this topic:
Pass or Fail---Are you SURE you want to transition?.) Sometimes these kinds of threads stray into those kinds of challenges, and sometimes they stray into elitism, like "who's the more 'legitimate' woman?" As we have recently seen, they are not always a harmless way to pass the time, so I wonder just how appropriate they are in a public area of the forum. 'nuff said...
