I was reading this last night. It really breaks my heart. My tg feelings weren't as strong when I was young, so I suppressed my feminine tendencies on my own, knowing that I would suffer socially... I can't imagine this level of persecution, though. Taking away all of a child's toys? Forbidding her from seeing her friends? What could ever convince someone that's a good idea? Even beyond the gender identity issues, not permitting children to play and form friendships is going to have a huge developmental impact... and definitely not a positive one. People just don't fucking care, so long as they don't have to wonder which bathroom you'll walk into...

Back in November 1996, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors passed a resolution condemning the coercive psychological treatment of youth using the GID diagnosis as the "justification" for such treatment. On spec I wrote and submitted an article on the double-edged sword of the GID diagnosis to the San Francisco Bay Times, which selected it for the 11/28/96 cover story. It's pretty sad that 12 years later we still have quacks like Ken Zucker using the psychological equivalent of leeches.

Hey, zuckers right. Reparative therapy does produce a lot fewer apparently transgender people. Parents have been doing it for years, along with peers, usually with direct verbal abuse, and sometimes physical abuse.

It may result in increased depression and suicide rates, but hey, there are fewer trannies, so according to zucker, it's all for the good.

The dork.

The parents who take their kids to the Zuckers of this world do so because they simply don't want to face up to the truth but I believe they come to realize in fairly short order what the truth is. They may stick it out but once the insurance money runs out and they're faced with having to pay for Zucker out-of-pocket I believe it's a safe bet that they bail.

Too true. BTW, remember lobotomies? What was the name of that quack who almost single-handed committed mayhem on thousands of people? The "pshrinks" so often have a new "therapy" for their latest non-existent "disorder".

I believe it is important to avoid the "pshrinks", of all varieties, at all costs. I hope that people soon find a way to eliminate them from the surgery procurement process, which ought to largely eliminate them from the lives of the population. I also hope that everyone comes to understand how important it is to boycott any and all so-called "research" about the population too.

I wonder if these 'scientists' have children. How can they be so brutal, and how can parents fall for it?

And what is it that makes these 'scientist' so fanatically interested in sex research? All I can say is Stay away from people who want to help you being normal!

It's rough for those of us with good parents to understand how bad parents can exist... For some, it's worth sacrificing the child you have for the chance at the child you want... heck, some are just cruel for the hell of it. My dad got beat senseless on a regular basis, for essentially no reason.

The Torontoist has a good commentary about the tragic state of Bradley mentioned in the first part of the NPR series.

It is very clear Bradley is not 'cured', but pushed into a closet. The results maybe tragic, I have fears Bradley will eventually attempt suicide.

If I wanted to be Russian... Learned the language, perfected the accent, moved over there and lived for several years then came back for a visit, say short visit to see parents, and met Zucker and he asks me, where am I from and I replied "Russia"

Would he bring up my childhood growing up in the USA? It is irrelevant!

It's clear that Zucker has an agenda in pushing his therapy even though it's been shown over and over again it doesn't work. What happens the day Bradly goes postal on his classmates because of his repressed identity. It is evident when a child is allowed to develop naturally with parental support we end up with well adjusted people living life the best way known to themselves. I know personally that since I came out and started living full time. I have become a happier person that can function in society. Once I have had my corrective surgeries I plan on coming off of disability and returning to work, this is the goal we should have is too make people comfortable with who they are and not to force our opinion onto them. Like my mom would say about opinion's is there like asshole's everyone has one.
