Now see, when I noticed she stopped posting or communicating, I said to myself "well, she hit that point where we sorta gotta just get the head right 'cause there's a lot of crap to learn in a short time".

I didn't think anything nasty of it -- I just figured she was taking some much needed time now (what with the olympics coming up and all)...

Awwww, thats not very nice, Darlie! I thought I made it plain enough that my comment was mere conjecture (and a wee bit facetious, besides).

Conjecture that a veteran journalist has quite sufficient contacts to get her story out, if so wishing. Any change in her employment would involve sufficient inducements to make it satisfactory to her. Whatever the story, the fact that it isn't a news story, is because Christine wishes it not.

I take issue with her statement that "Hormones + legal name change + setting the stage for a new life = happiness, no doubt about that. Money plays a massive role in that, which is one reason so many transsexual wait until their mid-40s to begin their transitions." Somehow I don't see "Mike" sitting there at a sports desk for 23 years waiting for "his" savings get to a level where "Okay, I have enough money now, time to transition." While the point about the cost of transition is valid, it's a misleading answer. It is the social stigma against transition, plus the transsexual person's internal denial, that IMO makes one wait until middle age to transition.

Oh my! How time flies! I didn't even notice that because I NEVER would have thought this story more than a year old already.

P.S. Yeah, the comment is suspect. But were I to "take issue" with every improbable but convenient self-justification of this sort, my fingers would be worn down to the second knuckle.

Sure is dated June 8,2007 - a year ago. How is that relevant to what has transpired in the last 12 months? Back then it was based on 2 months worth of events which by now are ancient history.

On June 7th, her mother passed away. Services were held on June 12th, 2008.

Actually, Christine's last column was on April 4th, and there is no mention of her being on vacation in it. Nor could I find anything on the Times website about her absence. I sent her an email , which hasn't bounced, so it's just a matter of waiting for a reply.

Two-month vacation, huh. Been a year already, you say? Is two months enough time to recover from surgery?
