IT took me a bit to calm down before I could come back here and write what I am about to write in a decent frame of mind.

breezy: get a clue.

Anything further from me on that post is going to be cause for being banned.

Well I am glad you were able to calm down. As you know I am not only a veteran but also had a few interesting times in places like DaNang and other hot spots. I believe benefits should be provided only to veterans wounded in combat. I believe benefit packages are used to entice young Americans into service during times when there are not enough volunteers willing to serve. I also believe this country will never suffer from a lack of volunteers if and when the country is actually threatened or under attack. Does that position cause you any great concerns?

Vietnam was not only a screw up but it also came close to creating civil war in America because the draft was the only way Johnson could fill the services with enough troops to build up a half a million troops serving half way around the world in a 200 year old southeast asia civil war. As I was leaving service the politicians moved to much higher pay, big benefits and eliminated the draft. They openly made those moves in order to be prepared for future situations that had nothing to do with the defense of America and everything to do with imposing the will of our leadership on the rest of the world. I am now 60. I lived those times. They are not some philosophical exercise for debate between facile minds but rather experiences to me. As Mark Twain once said "when you have had hold of the tail of a bull you automatically know a few things other folks don't".

I support all efforts for fair and equitable treatment in the U.S. armed services of all races, creeds, sexual orientation, gender identification, religions and any other darn difference you want to name. At the same time I advocate just what I said which is eliminate all benefits to all service personnel except to those wounded in combat.

I hope you can understand my position without rancor even though you may hold one that is at odds with it. BTW I never supported any of the military actions of the Bush administration or Clinton or Bush 1.

well, Deena, yeah, I do.

But not along the same lines as what I read in Breezy's first comment in the thread.

I can't add much to this thread except that I wonder what happened to the rest of TAVA's survey.

I was part of this survey, and the researcher who gave it to me told me very clearly that they were compiling statistics from non vets to include in their survey results. I must have spent twenty minutes filling this thing out, I'm a little miffed if they threw away all the other data without publishing it.

Perhaps I'll find it later; I believe in statistics about as much as I believe in the tooth fairy, but nevertheless I'd like to see what they came up with. Useless inaccurate statistics can go both ways, occasionally I like to use them myself.

Seattle's VA Hospital provides hormones and therapy, groups, etc. The therapy is spotty I hear, since a lot of it is people getting OJT about "gender issues" their patients may be having. But that's pretty good considering what you might think the military policy would be, isn't it?

The main problem facing those who access services through the VA seems to be the wackos. Trans types who go there being serious, keeping to themselves, and doing things sensibly don't run into many problems from what I've seen. There are, however, people with personality disorders who claim they are "transgender" and make a spectacle of themselves. They crave attention and will get it any way they can, good or bad. Mostly bad though. Then all the people who see them parading around the VA mutter to themselves "Oh those horrible transsexuals". I bet they wonder why the government has all these queers running around disgracing the service.

I count on people not generalizing too much. If I were to generalize for each group based on the specimens I've met, I'd be convinced by now that the world is full of selfish, evil cheaters who only care about getting as much as possible "for free" and who only act nice as a means to obtain it.

Oh, wait...
