Animals have all sorts of weird rituals. I guess they are their equivalent to our religious rituals?
Dogs and wolves circle three times before sleeping. Even on carpet. Some say it's to make their bed, although the most widely held belief I've heard is that they do so to ward off evil spirits while they sleep.
Another ritual is that of cattle when they are released from the barn at the end of the winter: cows eat soil, dig, kiss the ground. It's the Earth Embracing ritual, and like with the Three Circles ritual of canids, scientists propose a logical explanation: they eat dirt because of iron and magnesium deficiency.
If these were performed by humans, we'd give them some religious significance, I bet. Anyway, a cow doing the Earth Embracing ritual, in case you haven't seen it before:

My dog does virtually the exact same thing as the cow. Except he uses his hind legs to kick the dirt away.
I always figured he just had an itchy face. He loves getting his face itched, especially under the ears. Maybe my dog is performing the Earth Embracing Ritual? If he is, he's even cooler than I thought.

Every dog that I"ve had does that, and if you look on the ground where he"s rubbing his head, there"s probably a dead earthworm. For some reason, dogs like to rub there head on dead earthworms.
