Well, since the "Whatevah" thread seems to be a sorta popular place to dump Whatevah you want without fear of retribution, why not have a Whatevah style music thread?
I frequently burn cd"s for my own personal musical enjoyment in this fashion, and it keeps it interesting jumping from one genre to another, for me at least.
So for all of you who don"t want to go thru the hassle(too busy/undecided,or whatevah),to make a decision on which music thread to put your musical choice in...Here ya go!.
I"ll do the official christening of this wacky new music thread with an appropriate one from...

Back in the 70s there was the fashion of dancing popurríes (mix of songs) in South America and Central America. One of the most famous was based on tropical music from Panam: La Parranda en Panamá.
It's a mix of cha cha, guaracha, cumbia, rumba, mambo, salsa and son.
Songs: Allá en el camino real (Over There in the Royal Road) Cincha mi caballo (Harness my Horse) La Ligia Elena El tambor de la alegría (The Drum of Happiness) Degayola Hojita de guarumal (Little Leaf of the Guarumal) La perica (The She-Parakeet) Tona de calle bajo (Street Party Down the Street) Si se quema el monte (If the Mount is Burning) Coge el pandero que se te va (Grab the Tamborine Before It Rolls Away) Chencha quiere a Sebastián (Placencia loves Sebastian) Guarabé Viva Panamá (Long Live Panama) Alfredo si tu te vas (Alfredo If You Leave) Hecha el chingo al agua (Throw the Boat in the Water) Dime la verdad (Tell Me The Truth) Monteriano (Song from the Mounts) La galera (The Galley) Vamonos caminando (Let's Go Walking)
Parranda = slang term for a late-night party, usually a family affair, that has songs, drinks and dancing.
A typical parranda starts a Friday at about 9 pm and ends on Saturday at 5 am.

Ever put two versions of a song back to back? Take these two versions of "I Can't Explain" -- I've really for some reason turned back the clock recently.
_________________________ If you adopt the methods of your enemies you have not truly defeated them.
The original version, in French: Comme d'habitude (As Always) Year: 1967. Music: Jacques Revaux & Claude François. Lyrics: Claude François & Gilles Thibaut. Performer: Claude François.
English versions:
Music: Jacques Revaux & Claude François. Lyrics: Paul Anka.
Performer 1: Frank Sinatra. Year: 1969.
And now, the end is near And so I face the final curtain. My friend I'll make it clear, I'll state my case, of which Im certain.
I've lived a life thats full, I've traveled each and ev'ry highway; And more, much more than this, I did it... my way.
Regrets, I've had a few -- But then again, too few to mention. I did what I had to do, And saw it through, without exemption.
I planned each charted course; Each careful step along the byway. But more, much more than this, I did it my way.
Yes, there were times, I guess you knew When I bit off more than I could chew. But through it all, when there was doubt, I ate it up, then spit it out. I faced it all, and I stood tall -- And did it my way.
I've loved, I've laughed and cried, I've had my fill, my share of losing. But now, as tears subside, I find it all... so amusing.
To think I did all that, And may I say - not in a shy way: "No, oh no not me, I did it my way."
For what is a man, what has he got? If not himself, then he has naught. To say the things he truly feels And not the words of one who kneels The record shows I took the blows -- And did it my way!
Performer 2: Elvis Presley. Year: 1977 (weeks before dying).

If you knew what I've had to do to come see you If you knew what I've had to say to see you again You'd never get angry And you'd never doubt my love for you If you knew how I've had to lie to be with you
If you know how much I have to struggle to come out They think I'm too young to be happy No one at home understands me They all censor my way to behave If you knew what I had to invent to come with you
When will the day arrive when I won't have to be away from you! When will the hour arrive when we can go out together, without lying!
To see you, and speak to you, whenever I feel like it So you could see me, and talk to me whenever you feel like it!

Well,it"s taken me awhile to decide and come to this conclusion, but after being around for a few decades, and listening to,and seeing many rock-n-roll bands and different styles come and go....This band has to be the over-all,all-time best rock-n-roll band of all time,IMO.
They first appeared in the 1970"s,have never gone out of style, and everyone(even right now),from children to senior citizens love this band. They"re timeless! The younger commenters especially on youtube are always complaining that all the new music/groups suck,so they end up listening to and commenting about all the older/classic groups. This one, from what I've observed seems to be the all-time fave of everyone...The make-up,The costumes,The music,Time-less...
Here"s a random song from them, plus of course their all-time classic signature song...
Kiss
I Love It Loud

The Latin rythm known as "merengue" is in fact just a faster version of the Central African "soukous" genre. The former dates from the mid 30s, the later from the early 20s.
An example of this:
The soukous Dedé Priscilla (in Kamtok & French) by the Cameroonese singer Lea Lignanzi (1986):
The Spanish version, the merengue A pedir su mano (1991) by the Dominican singer Juan Luis Guerra:

She: I love you... I love you... oh yes I love you He: Neither do I... She: Oh my love
He: Physical love... has no way out I come and I go and I come Between your hips I come and I go And then I stop
She: No! Now... come
* Yeah the vid doesn't fit the intention of the music... but it's the best quality available. In fact, the movie is about a gay men couple and how one of them falls in love with a woman but is incapable to have frontal sex with her. So they can only have anal sex, and that's why the word used in French, "reins," which could be translated as "hips," is in fact the lower back, where the kidneys (reins) are.

Mahatma Ghandi, though a devout Hindu, was widely known to admire Jesus; Ghandi often quoted from the Sermon on the Mount, in fact. Once when the missionary E. Stanley Jones met with Ghandi he asked him, "Mr. Ghandi, though you quote the words of Christ often, why is that you appear to so adamantly reject becoming his follower?" Ghandi replied, "Oh, I don't reject your Christ. I love your Christ. It's just that so many of you Christians are so unlike your Christ."

"Closer" (also known as Halo 9) is a song written by Trent Reznor and featured on the 1994 Nine Inch Nails album The Downward Spiral. In mid-1994, the song was released as the second single from the album. Most versions of the single are titled "Closer to God," a rare example in music of a single's title differing from the title of its A-Side. ("Closer to God" is also the title of an alternate version of "Closer" featured on the single.) This single is numbered as Halo Nine under Nine Inch Nails' system of Halo numbers. In spite of the blunt and profane sexual content contained in the song's lyrics (the chorus infamously begins with the couplet "I wanna fuck you like an animal/ I wanna feel you from the inside"), "Closer" became Nine Inch Nails' biggest hit up to that time, cemented Reznor's status as an industrial rock superstar, and remains arguably his best-known song. Heavily censored versions of the song and its equally explicit and controversial music video (directed by Mark Romanek) received substantial airplay on radio and MTV. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Closer_(Nine_Inch_Nails_song)

Romance language music can be terribly cheesy. Yet, I still love it.
From the mythical Sanremo '72, Roberto Carlos (from Brazil) interprets Un gatto nel blu ("A Cat in the Dark"). He sings Italian with a Portuguese accent, but I don't mind.
The song was much more popular in Spanish as Un gato en la oscuridad:
And the orchestral version by Franck Pourcel (French orchestra):
When I was a child, what a riot! Playing war games in the street Jumping the fence, you and I, then In your eyes a new feeling I discovered
The roses, the love, my home And a cat to be my companion But since it's over I don't know why The windows seem empty without you
A cat in the dark guards the stars I don't want to go back home without you If you knew, what a beautiful night is out there! Perhaps enough to overcome a great sorrow.
A cat in the dark in your stead To notice the love I carry for you Soon you will be in my eyes as well But tonight only a tear is there
Beloved, beloved, my life Scent of linden tree leaves If to love like this is a sin, I am sinful I love you, it's all the life that I know...

This group/song brings back some memories...It was the late 70"s,and me and the gang of boys and girls had decided the night before to go to a Pink floyd concert at Soldiers Field in Chicago. We loaded up 4 cars with about 20 of us the next day and headed on out.Well, because the majority of us worked,we had to just to get together and try to get there in time for general admission tickets at the door.We just missed making it on time,so.....We had to just settle for hanging out outside the stadium partying with the other unfortunate ones who didn"t make it in time either .It was ok though because we could hear the music outside the stadium real well, and even saw the pigs that were floating around up above the stadium(it was part of the show to have helium filled pig blimps floating around ).
I was never a huge fan of them(this is really the only song from them that I like, and this is a excellent performance of it.cool video too )

This is a song the singer/composer Roberto Carlos dedicated to his very old father, Mi querido, mi viejo, mi amigo ("My dear dad, my old man, my friend"). This one is in Spanish, by the way.

I'm using this thread to dump in some of my fave songs in Romance languages. Romantic songs, of course. There is a reason why they are Romance languages.
Bobby Solo singing Gelosia ("Jealousy") in the Sanremo festival, 1980 (in Italian... I wonder if to the English ears Italian, Spanish and Portuguese all sound the same... truth is, if you speak one, you can understand the other two).

Go for it Marcella. Make me cry. I know a little Italian still but had an extremely difficult time in Brazil understanding the language. They speak Portuguese and they speak it at lightspeed.

Oh yeah, you need to have a solid vocabulary to better get the other languages, as a start.
As with English. If you have a robust lexicon, learning German words is a lot easier, since you'll recognize the common roots quickly.
Ok, one more in Italian (although for some reason this one was big in Germany, not so much in the Romance world): El Pasador with Amada mia, amore mio (1977):

I don"t speak any of those three languages, but I can give my own personal opinion as to whether two of them(Italian/Spanish,I've never been around anyone who speaks portuguese) sound the same or not...close,but I can hear differences between the two that I've heard, and have been around quite a bit-My Italian relatives, and some hispanic friends in the past. They are very similar sounding though.

Something about Spanish, Italian and Portuguese: you can use suffixes to do lots of things to words.
The emphatic suffix -ísimo or -issimo is used instead of "very" for emphasis. Thus, "magro" = slim in Italian, and "magrissimo" = very slim. For a woman, it'd "magrissima."
You can even push it to exaggeration: magrississimo (it.), flaquisisísimo (sp.).
Same with diminutive suffixes: chica = small (sp., fem.); chiquita = very small; chiquitita = very, very small. And you can continue, adding "ti" until you want to stop.

Cool as I am
Yea, there was a time I didn't like the love, I liked the climbers, I was no sister then, I was running out of time and one liners, And I was afraid, like you are when you're too young to know the time, and So I watched the way you take your fear and hoard the horizon, You point, you have a word for every woman you can lay your eyes on, Like you own them just because you bought the time, And you turn to me, you say you hope I'm not threatened,
Oh -- I'm not that petty, as cool as I am, I thought you'd know this already, I will not be afraid of women, I will not be afraid of women.
So now were at a club, you watch the woman dancing, she is drunk, She is smiling and she's falling in a slow, descending funk, And the whole bar is loud and proud and everybodys trying, yeah. You play the artist, saying, "is it how she moves, or how she looks?" I say, it's loneliness suspended to our own like grappling hooks, And as long as she's got noise, she's fine. But I could teach her how I learned to dance when the music's ended,
Oh -- and that's not petty, as cool as I am, I thought you'd know this already, I will not be afraid of women, I will not be afraid of women.
You tried to make me doubt, to make me guess, tried to make me feel like a little less, Oh, I liked you when your soul was bared, I thought you knew how to be scared, And now it's amazing what you did to make me stay, But truth is just like time, it catches up and it just keeps going,
And so I'm leaving, you can find out how much better things can get, And if it helps, I'd say I feel a little worse than I did when we met, So when you find someone else, you can try again, it might work next time, You look out of the kitchen window and you shake your head and say low, "if I could believe that stuff, I'd say that woman has a halo," And I look out and say, "yeah, she's really blond," And then I go outside and join the others, I am the others,
Oh -- and thats not easy, I don't know what you saw, I want somebody who sees me, I will not be afraid of women, I will not be afraid of women.

The Ансамбль Александрова ("Red Army Chorus") interpreting Катюша ("Katyusha," that is, Little Cathy):
Apple and pear trees were blooming, Mist was creeping on the river. Katyusha stepped out of the banks, On the steep and lofty bank.
She was walking, singing a song About a grey steppe eagle, About her true love, Whose letters she was keeping.
Oh you song! Little song of a maiden, Head for the bright sun. And reach for the soldier on the far-away border Along with greetings from Katyusha.
Let him remember an ordinary girl, And hear how she sings, Let him preserve the Motherland, Same as Katyusha preserves their love.

you could follow me, I don't know where I'm going, you could follow me You could follow me, it might not be the smartest thing to do but you could follow me...
I want you to be happier than me I'm a poor example of a carefree human being Here's a list of thing I wish to be your pillow and your blanket and your life time guarantee I can love you all the way across the ocean And I doubt that that will ever go away
you could follow me, I don't know where I'm going, you could follow me You could follow me, it might not be the smartest thing to do but you could follow me...
If I ever stop believing there's a reason for my life, I might as well stop trying to make sense of what is right, you could follow me...
but you Should follow me

Some songs become super-classics and are recorded in dozens of languages around the whole world.
One of those is It Hurts to Say Goodbye.
Originally composed by Arnold Goland (music) and Jacob Gold (lyrics), it was recorded first by Margaret Whiting in 1966. Vera Lynn made it famous the next year:
Later on, many other versions appeared: Was mach ich ohne dich ("What do I do Without You?" the German version); Il Pretesto ("The excuse," the Italian version); and the most famous of all: Comment te dire adieu? ("How to Say Goodbye?" the French version).
This last was interpreted by Françoise Hardy, with arrangements by the great Serge Gainsbourg, in 1968:
Finally, Gainsbourg released a great instrumental version that same year, that became a jingle in TV:

The best album of the year in Finnish contemporary music. This song tells about Seili island, Själö in Swedish (Seal island) where leper and mental patients were deported
I just got this one in an email from someone I know a few minutes ago. It"s about a 90 year old couple who went to the Mayo clinic for a checkup or something...and ended up doing an impromptu piano duet performance while they were there...

Album: Seili Artist: Jenni Vartiainen Jenni Vartiainen - Missä muruseni on (with english and finnish lyrics)
Lyrics: Missä muruseni on (Where my sweetheart is)
Yöllä taas mä menin parvekkeelle nukkumaan, (At nigh again I went to sleep on the balcony) jotta lähempänä mua ois hän (So that he'd be closer to me) Pediltäni taivas näkyy, ryhdyin oottamaan, (You can see the sky from my bed, I began to wait) että näen tähden lentävän (that I'd see a flying star) Sanovat jos jossain huomaa tähdenlennon niin (They say that if you notice a shooting star somewhere) toivoa voit silloin mitä vaan (Then you can wish for anything) Yöllä ylös taivaalle mä pyynnön kuiskasin (At night I whispered a request up to the sky) Kävisipä pian tuulemaan (I wish that wind would blow soon)
Tuuli tuule sinne missä muruseni on (Wind blow where my sweetheart is) Leiki hetki hänen hiuksillaan (Play a moment with his hair) Kerro rakkauteni, kerro kuinka ikävöin (Tell him I love him, how I miss him) Kerro, häntä ootan yhä vaan (Tell, I'm still waiting for him)
Tyyni oli eilen yö (Last night was calm) mut kohta kuitenkin (But soon after all) Tuuli henkäisi ja tuntee sain (The wind blew and I felt that) Joku liikkui lähelläni (Someone was moving near me) koski poskeain (Touched my cheek) Tutun käden tunsin ihollain (I felt a familiar hand on my skin)
Enkä enää epäillyt (I didn't doubt anymore) vaan tiesin, että voin (And I knew that I could) Niin kuin pieni lapsi nukahtaa (Fall asleep like a small child) Ilma jota hengitämme samaa ilmaa on (The air that we breathe is the same) Ja jalkojemme alla sama maa (And the same ground beneath our feet)

Sheidi is a young singer in Finnish music life.
It is contemporary dance music from the Finnish woodlands. It is fusion having new elements and English overflow to the basic Finnish dance genre, melancholic schlager music
Panit backstage passin koristamaan mun kaulaa. Me rantaveteen vielä kahlataan ja aallot meitä kantaa. Lavan luona, yönä tuona vaihtui katseet suudelmiin.

English lyrics:
When the tent was set in a negotiated place; as soon someone knocked it upside down. And the last drops of wine was drunk, so continuously. In Ruis Rock festivals, in peace and love, believed all. by the stage, the first glances on that night were exchanged.
And I hear it again Be-bop-a-Lula when you pick up your guitar and play, like in year -96 we met at the festival. And I remember that night Be-bop-a-Lula I eat from your hand , nurture my love, that beauty when summer was shining into your hair.
You say you come backstage, when Karjalainen sings. You did put a backstage pass to decorate my neck. We will wade in beach water and the waves will carry us. by the stage, were exchanged during that night, the glances with kisses.
And I hear it again Be-bop-a-Lula when you pick up your guitar and play, like in year -96 we met at the festival. And I remember that night Be-bop-a-Lula I eat from your hand , nurture my love, that beauty when summer was shining into your hair.

Jani Wickholm - Hukun
refrain
refrain
Taas silmiisi sun mä hukun.

Jani Wickholm - I'm drowning
You smile and ask how I am, how the years have treated the sailor. Well, not bad, everything works, no reason to complain, yes you will capture few memories for the home of your soul from these ways.
I often think, of you, of course, There hasn't been a reason to forget. We were lovers, what is that to regret, just a bit too different, and each on their own I guess too.
refrain: And I always talked to you about how you're beautiful, when you were talking about the injustice in the world. And when I can see you now, again in the same old trap I drift, and I'm drowning in the eyes of yours
You tried to be an adult to me, voice of reason, the last straw. But I declined the rescue, just like even now, I catch the thought, it's your way to be human.

Egotrippi - Nämä ajat eivät ole meitä varten
original
Toivoasi et saa menettää toivoasi et saa menettää jokaisella jossakin on joku yhtä lailla lohduton
Egotrippi - These times are not for us
translation
And yet there comes a beautiful day when the troubles on the road will give way you are not always sad, although it feels like that now There will be a new era, you will be noticed the day comes when someone else than I sit beside you before you notice it.
Hope, you mustn't lose it, even though nothing else will remain you have me, because everyone has someone equally desperate
These times are not for us, but you have to try this is a god-forsaken place, it is known your turn will come you will be noticed There will come a day when someone sees you as such I see you
You must not lose hope, you mustn't, even though nothing else will remain you have me, because everyone has someone equally desperate
Hope, you mustn't lose it Hope, you mustn't lose it everyone has someone equally desperate

In Aymara/Quechua tradition, the best herbalists/shamans are itinerant ones, the Qollahuayas ("Kallawaya"), only speakers of a very ancient language, of a extinct language family (Pukina). Instead of using knots for writing, they use shells --but the tradition is to burn all shells to ashes once the Qollahuaya who wrote them dies.
So far, the language of the Qollahuaya remains secret, and they won't reveal anything about it to anyone who's not a family member. With other people they will communicate in Quechua or Aymara, though.

The great French composer Francis Lai made the music for many movies in the 60s and 70s, including the soundtrack for 1970's cheesy Love Story.
The two themes that became famous from that movie are the Love Theme and the Snow Frolic (Skating in the Central Park), here played by the great (now deceased) Stanley Black and the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation Orchestra:
Snow Frolic, the music heard from 1:09 to 1:49, became a popular song by the title "Look Around And You'll Find Me There" in the English-speaking world. Here sung by Al Martino:
Meanwhile, the Love Theme became (with lyrics) "Where Do I Begin," here sung by Andy Williams:
Snow Frolic took a different course in the Romance-language world, where it became known as To Give You My Heart. Here the Spanish version, by Nino Bravo ("Para darte my corazón"):

One of the oldest melodies posted here. Máximo Ramón Ortiz was a politician with a picturesque life. Leader of a separatist nation in Southern Mexico (down in Oxaca, in the Tehuantepec area), he was captured and executed by the Liberals when he was only 39, in 1855. Two years before, his mother had died (due to civil unrest, he couldn't be there when she died), and as a homage to her he had composed this song: Sandunga (1853). The Lila Downs version.
