I always found Abbot & Costello to have inherited something from Laurel & Hardy, at least in the body language.
This is a fave of mine, from City Lights:

"Populace above, populace below! What are 'poor' and 'rich' at present! That distinction did I unlearn,—then did I flee away further and ever further, until I came to those kine." --Thus Spake Zarathustra / Friedrich Nietzsche.
One of the very first Our Gang episodes, "The Champeen!" (1923) has Ernie profiting from a disagreement between Mickey and Jack, so he convinces them to box and he gets the money... or whatever the other kids can give.

Sometimes it strikes me that modern comedy, like modern music, has been on a steady decline since the time it was created. As Bach's heights will never be reached again, so Max Linder will remain the guy everybody after only can but copy.
So now we have humour only about the most base of bodily functions, or the exaggerated differences between men and women or blacks and whites. Shame.
Here is Max, with Maurice Tourneur (the tall guy), and a very young (15 or so) Hope Hampton at the end. From the short "Combat de boxe" (1910):

Sorry, but you have no choice...keep moving along please...
The living past...here and gone...
Self preservation...the weak link between ideas and action.
At times when the bar is set too high...it's sometimes best to just go under it instead.
To die in the arms of a loved one...peaceful bliss.
