"Merry-Go-Round"~ ANTJE DUVEKOT

Merry-Go-Round
Someone is tossing petals in a stream
Somewhere someone is standing at the foothills of their dreams
Someone got a paintbrush, is painting over doubts
Someone opened up his eyes and saw the sun coming out
Someone was captive and found the courage to get off
From a boulder in the well, somewhere the rain has stopped
Someone is finding the place where they belong

Everyday is summer somewhere in the world
And the summer boys are headed for the falls to kiss the girls
With their impatient hands groping honey breasts and curls
They are filled with desire
And high in the hills there's a baby being born
As forgiveness and peace wash over bruises and sores
People bridging the distance over nettles and thorns

Everyone aboard on the merry-go-round
Some things will rise up so that others come down
If the devil don't dance, heaven won't shine
It's a mighty thick haze and it's a pretty thin line
If the facuet is tightened up the love won't flow
If the love isn't bright enough the corn won't grow
If the night isn't dark enough the moon won't glow

A rich man counting money, a tired man counting sheep
While the safe man counts his blessings, the hungry man has beans
There's a million people praying, raising up their eyes
To what turns out to be the same god, the same sky
We are slightly scared of death, a little bit afraid
So we celebrate everything we can think to celebrate
We shall sing out loud to keep the hounds away

Everyone aboard on the merry-go-round
Some things will rise up so that others come down
If the devil don't dance, heaven won't shine
It's a mighty thick haze and it's a pretty thin line
If the facuet is tightened up the love won't flow
If the love isn't bright enough the corn won't grow
If the night isn't dark enough the moon won't glow

Prisons will crumble and governments will fall
It's the order of freedom to be preceded by walls
Cause the truth would be worthless if no one ever lied
So we carry our shame in the interest of pride
And we have all these questions to make us go roam
And we’ve got all this distance to make us come home
As the sun burns, a child learns, the tide churns, the world turns

Everyone aboard on the merry-go-round
Some things will rise up so that others come down
If the devil don't dance, heaven won't shine
It's a mighty thick haze and it's a pretty thin line
If the faucet is tightened up the love won't flow
If the love isn't bright enough the corn won't grow
If the night isn't dark enough the moon won't glow

"Voices Carry"~ 'TIL TUESDAY

"Voices Carry" is a song by American new wave band 'Til Tuesday. Written by Aimee Mann, the song was produced by Mike Thorne for the group's debut album Voices Carry, released in 1985. The song is about past sour relationships and was originally written and sung as if to a woman, but the lyrics were changed due to Epic Records' pressure.

Directed by D.J. Webster, the accompanying music video received wide exposure on MTV, positive reactions from critics, was nominated for numerous awards, and it is attributed to be the reason behind the song's success. It was released in North America in March 1985 to positive reviews from music critics. "Voices Carry" became the band's highest charting single and their only top 10 hit in the U.S., peaking at number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100. Internationally it reached the top 20 in Canada and Australia.

Yma Sumac, a Peruvian singer from the 40s and 50s, had (at the time) the largest vocal range, spanning five octaves.

Currently, that record has been left behind by other singers, and the current record holder is Georgia Brown, a Brazilian singer.

Yma Sumac interpreting Chuncho. She can make bird calls with her voice:

And Georgia Brown, singing in whistle register*:

Georgia's range goes from G2 to G10 (eight octaves). G10 is 25,088 Hz, well beyond the hearing limit for humans.

The male record is Adam López, with a C-bemol8 (4,435 Hz). Here by comparison:

---
* The four registers from lowest to highest are "deep fry" (distended vocal cords, made in the chest and lower larynx), "modal" (normal voice), "falsetto" and "whistle." About 10% of women can do deep fry, while under 5% of males can do whistle.

"Poker Face" is also the most downloaded song in the British chart history. "Crimson and Clover"~ JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts did a rendition of the song in 1981 that appears on the album I Love Rock 'n Roll, and reached #7 on the Billboard Hot 100. She sings the song with the original lyrics which are sung about a woman. Jett did another rendition of the song in 1995 as the lead singer of Evil Stig (Jett's collaboration with punk band The Gits) on the live album Evil Stig.

"Crimson and Clover" is a song by Tommy James and the Shondells. It was one of the biggest hits of the 1960s and reached #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and #1 in Canada in 1969. It dropped from #18 to completely out of the Billboard pop charts in one week, setting a record for the farthest drop out of the charts.

"Crimson and Clover" was completely written and recorded by the duo of Tommy James and Peter Lucia Jr., the Shondells drummer. Lucia played drums and delivered backing vocals, while James played all other instruments and sang the lead vocals.

The song is famous for a unique "wobbly" vocal effect near the end of the song. To produce this effect, Tommy James plugged his microphone into a guitar amplifier, flipped the tremolo switch, and repeatedly sang the line "crimson and clover, over and over". When it was released in November 1968, some listeners thought he was saying "Christmas is over" instead of "crimson and clover."
