Well in reality I suppose it was me. Followed at age twelve by April Ashley.
She hit the UK newspapers and I suppose stopped me from sliding into chaos as my puberty was about due to start -
I knew then, it WAS possible and I COULD be a woman - I'd known forever that I was, but I also thought I was the oly one...

I felt a lot better about it after that

I remember that. What a jerk. Geraldo was (and probably is still) a huge transphobe. Shame. I liked him before that.

I used to comb every channel looking for a talk show with transsexualism as the topic for the day, and even any episodes of old sitcoms with the topic (there was a Love Boat episode, a Night Court episode...I could go on and on). I still do, but I've calmed a bit since starting HRT. I guess by actually starting, I don't feel so desparate that I need to sit there and ingest every tidbit I can find on tv. Maybe, in a way, I was living vicariously through my tv.

great threads never die! but this is funny! me too! i was fascinated with TG topics and TOTALLY lived vicariously through my TV...i'd comb TV guide each week! lol

ok...i first heard the term "pseudohermaphrodite" i think on a talk show in third grade. the next day i biked to the library and spent the next few days there trying to find a label to this madness! (yeah...3rd grade! it was harder too when the librarian would see this 9 year old combing through medical journals! lol she'd ask to help but i couldnt take her up on it)

finally started seeing the "guess who's the man" shows on maury povich! i think i still have most of the videos i taped! the internet introduced me to dana international (she'd be the first remembered ts figure)--which led me to a site that covered three TS's dana, tula and april ashley--(seriously--the site was called star-f*cked--bleh)

from there the internet introduced me to HRT and FFS--the rest is history!

so i cant remember my first in particular. (lol..i feel like a slut saying that!) oh! i remember the first TS i met from online (100% totally as friends) she transitioned at 14 and was 100% female--no male markers at all--just beautiful--but she had a really hard life..gawd i felt so bad for her, she was selling herself to make ends meat and hated every second...she's now in porn...:( and i know she's not happy.

i hope she's safe.

The first time I read about a ts woman was in a women's magazine when I was 12 - she was a Devon DJ who had been fired for transitioning on the job. It truly inpired me, and gave me a total sense of peace about myself. It was a real ephiany, anduntil the last few years I always looked out magazine with TS's related articles.
The first ts woman I met in the flesh was Nikki when I was 18 whom showed me a grounded view of the scene, and I am very grateful that she wasn't in your face. As a side not April Ashley really inspired me when I read into her background for my degree - she has lived her life in a very dignified manner, and has never been afraid to be herself.

hugs,
Rachel

The one in a magazine where they had her surgery step by step, all in color pictures, with enough blood around to make the least queasy person squirm. I was 10 and already haematophobic....

Thanks to her, whoever she was, I became aware it was possible. But those pics gave me nightmares.

Christine Jorgensen for me....I was about 7 or 8 and extremely confused and scared as a result of the feelings I'd had since earliest memory. Seeing an article about her in one of the NYC tabloids made me understand that I was not the only person in the world who felt this way, and that there was hope for me.....

The first TS woman that I ever knew about was a lady who used to live beside us. I had no idea she was born with a male assignment, nor did anyone else in the neighborhood. I still look up to her because she was very pretty and stealthed past every cursory eye.

This thread is three years old today! I posted the question February 25, 2003 and it lay dormant, then was resuscitated:
http://www.genderlife.com/forum/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/3677/an/0/page/0#3677

Many have replied by also identifying the first TS woman with whom they had personal contact. Its a good question, as many of us were fortunate to have mentors to guide our way or women who set a positive personal example.

So...look below.
