My first exposure was to Renee Richards, when my Mom complained about her playing women's tennis (she thought it unfair because of her XY makeup giving her a "muscular edge". I wa turned off by the picture in the paper - she obviously seemed to be a man in a dress.

Next was the character of Roberta Muldoon in Garp, first in the novel and then in the move (played by John Lithgow, which did not help his career at all.) Again, man in a dress syndrome, and besides the character was played for laughs and the surgery was likened to having 'it' simply bitten off.

Next was the serial killer in Silence of the Lambs. 'Nuff said.

In 1998 I first discovered that SRS actually produced a functional and cosmetically appealing vagina. But again, all the pictures I saw had male faces in them. It wasn't until I saw Andrea James' surgery pix with Ousterhout that I realized I could pull it off on my terms, and I never looked back. That was in June of 2001.

I was aware of Christine Jorgensen at some point, but I don't recall seeing pictures of her growing up, only stories, so I guess I just presumed she fell into the same boat as the others I mentioned.

If only I'd had better role models as a teen.... *sigh*

It was Christine Jorgensen. My father was a transvestite and I believe he made me aware of her. He was also a trucker and he had a book among all of his collected smut called "Boys will be girls" Debased fearmongering stuff. Then there was that John Waters Movie.

Renee Richards, and then Jan Morris, right afterwards (I found their respective biographies in the East Lansing Library)

I had heard of Christine Jorgensen, briefly mentioned here and there...

but it was an article in Playboy magazine... an interview with Wendy (formerly Walter) Carlos of "Switched on Bach" fame (one of my fave albums still) which captured my imagination and gave me the first clue as to who, and what I am.

With shaking hands and racing heart, I read the article and realized that her story was so much like my own story... I UNDERSTOOD.

12 years old... Christine Jorgenson... I used to go to the library and take the book off the shelf and read in the stacks... I was too scared to take it out.

I heard of the G.I. who became a girl when I was around 5. It didn't click for me until a long time after that. I was fascinated with the idea but didn't see it as real. I remember seeing Diahann Caroll play a transexual on the "Facts of Life" in the 80's. The first face to face I had with a transexual was with a close friend when I was 17. Before that, I was well aware of drag queens who went full time, but I didn't want to be a drag queen. And I didn't want to get "pumped". (Getting pumped is having silicone pumped into the body illegally.)
So It wasn't til I saw my friend transition when I was 21 that I realized how possible it was; that it was something I could do on my own terms.

You know what's funny? My first Wendy Carlos album was "Digital Moonscapes", it's a great album, I still love it.

My dad had "The Well Tempered Synthesizer" Walter's next album after "Switched On Bach (it's mine now.) He and I enjoyed both of them.

Until I read that Playboy article, I had never connected the two...

I'll have to check out that album... I haven't heard of it before. (of course i never really looked either) Thanks!

Wendy is awesome! She changed my whole world with that interview. Like you, i had not connected Wendy/Walter either, prior.

God, if only i could've dealt with it all then!

I don't think it got very popular, although I thought it was really good. I love my dad, he has interesting taste in music. He hung out with beatniks, must've warped him.

Of course I rewarded him with Devo.

She is so gifted, and I really think transitioning opened her mind even more.

Sigh...yeah. Tomorrow is another day!

I understand... what is really interesting in my life since starting transition, 18 months ago, is how much creativity is pouring out of me. I play guitar and have written at least 5 songs in obscure tunings, primarily Gsus4 and D... some of my better (albeit moodier) pieces.

For me, it is finally "un-dividing" and reconciling myself, plus my spiritual searching which has given me this blessing.

gotta love paradigm shifts!
